RIDGELAND, MS (WLBT) -

Ridgeland Police have identified the woman who was arrested after she left her 3-year-old grandchild locked inside of a car.

According to Ridgeland Police Chief John Neal, the toddler was left unattended inside of a Lincoln MKZ, while his 56-year-old grandmother, ReJohnna B. Mitchell, of New Orleans, went inside to shop at the Lowe's Home Improvement on County Line Road.

Police received the call shortly after 7:30 p.m., on Sunday, from a person who saw the child in the parking lot.

When officers arrived, they found the child in the back seat. The car was not running and one window was cracked about two inches.

A passerby was able to assist police and firefighters by reaching her hand inside the window and unlocking the door. The child was removed from the car approximately 5 minutes after the 911 call came in.

Mitchell came out of the store while the child was being examined by the Ridgeland Fire Department and Pafford EMS.

She said that she was the grandmother of the child and that she had stopped at the store to use the restroom and then decided to shop for some plants.

The child was released to the mother after being checked by medical personnel.

Mitchell was arrested and charged with misdemeanor child neglect.

While officers were trying to arrest her, she resisted and has now been charged with resisting arrest. She was released from custody after posting a $2000 bond.

Mitchell has an initial court appearance set for July 26. She faces a maximum fine of $1000 and/or up to one year in jail on the child neglect charge. She will also face a maximum fine of $500 and/or 6 months in jail for the resisting arrest charge.
