Natchez Police are investigating the death of a man found dead in a homeowner's swimming pool. It happened early Thursday morning.

"Tragic," said Natchez resident Jim Sanders. "I mean we can't imagine why in the world something happened like that, you know."

Sanders was shocked after learning that 27-year-old Cedric Knight was found dead in the swimming pool behind this home on High Street in Natchez Thursday morning.

"A gentleman climbed the fence and got into the pool and the lady found him in there this morning," added Sanders.

The homeowner said it was a very tense and scary situation.

Natchez Police Lt. Kenneth Stampley says they received the call just after 6 a.m..

"We responded and found a black male in the bottom of the swimming pool in about 7 feet of water," said Lt. Stampley. "We ended up calling the Natchez Fire Department to come and retrieve the body out of the water once we finished our investigation techniques."

Documents show Knight does have a criminal past. He was convicted back in 2010 for residential and car burglary in Adams County.

The Adams County Coroner is performing a toxicology report. There is suspicion Knight may have been intoxicated before he fell into the pool.

The exact cause of death has not yet been released, however the coroner says he believes it is drowning.

"In the middle of the night, for something to happen, he may not have even been aware that the pool was there as dark as it was," said Sanders. "It's just tragic, it really is."

If you have any information about the case you are asked to call Natchez Police.
