Winning Miss Mississippi is a dream come true

It was a dream that took four years, but Laura Lee Lewis is floating on air after competing against 43 other contestants and winning the state title.

She will be competing again in September and hopes to be the fifth young woman from this state to win Miss America.

The reaction of Laura Lee Lewis says it all. For a week she joined the Miss Mississippi contestants competing in talent, swimwear, evening wear and on stage question.  She won the talent prelim Wednesday night.

Winning the crown has been a dream and a goal.

"I looked over to my left and I went there's a crown and a sash that say Miss Mississippi next to me. Is this real?" said Lewis. "Four long years of working towards a dream to be Miss Mississippi and it’s a reality; I'm so glad to be an ambassador for this program."

In her first official news conference the new Miss Mississippi talked about preparing for Miss America and possibly becoming the first state representative in 30 years to win the national title.

"I want that," she told us. "I want that for our state. I want to be the 5th Miss America for Mississippi. Hannah set the bar high and she was a great representative for this state but all we can do now is go up. First runner up, Miss America. I'm hopefully going to that next level and can bring the crown home."

The Brookhaven native says she is hoping to promote her platform, Mentoring Matters, to encourage kids who are victims of bullies across the state and possibly the nation. The Miss Mississippi send off where Lewis will share some of her wardrobe and talent for Miss America will be held in August.
