Property owners, saving Jackson money

The Jackson Police Department's Community Improvement Unit has helped the city save more than $1 million when it comes to removing eyesores from Jackson neighborhoods.

The department tracks down property owners with old and boarded up homes and compels them to pay for demolition or rehabilitation work. When the owners pay for the labor, the city doesn't have to.

"It's a quick fix because we don't have to go before city council and you know that takes time and money and everything so if these people take ownership of their property it will save a lot of time in getting the property cleared," says Jackson Police Commander Jaye Coleman.

212 homes have been demolished since October 2014.
