JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -

With a snip of the ribbon and the "closed" barrier removed, the Hanging Moss Bridge was reopened to traffic after being closed since last fall for repairs.

The repairs were a sight for sore eyes for Jackson drivers who need the Hanging Moss Bridge in their daily commute.

The repairs created congestion and inconvenienced motorists.

"But the big picture is that we have at least over 50 bridges that actually need this kind of attention, and so it's not just this bridge; it's not just the street that you live on, that you drive on, it's 2200 lane miles of street that we gotta take care of," said Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber. "It's thousands of miles of water lines, sewer lines. It's drainage that's causing people's homes to be flooded, so we got a lot of work to do, but at least we can say that we've gotten started."

The Hanging Moss Bridge was closed last fall after inspectors determined it was unsafe and needed to be replaced.

Yarber said that 1-percent sales tax funds were used to replace the bridge.
