JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -

He has done it all from music, Broadway, film and television.

Harry Connick Jr. is now taking his skills to places not seen since the days of Dean Martin and Steve Allen.

The crowd at Thalia Mara said it all with applause and cheers as Harry Connick, Jr. took the stage.

Born and raised in New Orleans, the entertainer has deep ties to Mississippi and shared that with us in an exclusive interview Thursday night.

Harry Connick, Jr. said, " Oh I love Mississippi. We had a place in Poplarville for years and years and years, so I love this state you know. I feel like its home here."

Connick is using all of his skill, talent and southern charm for daytime television with a new entertainment show.  We asked him why the jump from the silver screen and American Idol where he was a judge and coach.

Connick told us, "As an entertainer I think part of my job is to try to help people feel a little bit better, give them a respite from their daily activities on this TV show."

Described as a true entertainer, Connick explained what is most important to him and what he hopes to share on the new show.

Connick explained, "I've been blessed with an incredible wife and three beautiful daughters. That's really sort of first and foremost for me. But what I really enjoy is learning about what other people are going through."

From kids, to celebrity guests, parodies, stunts and audience participation, Connick believes he has the right formula for viewers.

Connick said, "no matter how well you hide it, no matter how much strength you have, and how much drive you have all of us have hardship and we can help each other through those hard times I think if we celebrate one another, and remind one another that there are many, many great blessings."

You can catch "Harry" weekdays on WLBT at 2 p.m. beginning September 12th.
