A Memorial Day Weekend outing to Lakeshore Park ended with a Jackson boy in critical condition after his parents' car was rear-ended in a chain reaction pile-up on the Spillway.

4-year-old Taylor Hartwell's parents say he suffered a skull fracture and swelling of the brain in Sunday's accident. He is in an induced coma in the pediatric ICU at Batson Children's Hospital.

Josh and Kat Hartwell and their two children were in their Honda Fit when they stopped on the Spillway behind a driver with a medical issue. The Hartwells say a dark colored Chrysler never slowed down and slammed into the back of their car.

"When the car it hit us I screamed," said Kat. "It was like, Taylor, oh my God! And I screamed and looked back and he was like ugh, shook his head, came in and out. I'm like Taylor wake up."

We are told Taylor is progressing.

"Heavily medicated, can't move, can't speak, can't do nothing right now," said Kat. "But he can hear us. So we talk to him. We joke around with him. The nurses talk to him all the time."

Kat and her 7-year-old daughter weren't injured. Jason suffered a gash on his face.

Reservoir Patrol Chief Perry Waggener says the 18-year-old driver who caused the crash is Edurado Gutierrez of El Carmen, Mexico. He was injured and transported to UMMC.

Gutierrez was cited for no drivers license and no insurance.
