JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -

The Memorial Day Weekend winds down with thousands of people getting behind the wheel heading home after spending time with family and friends. This vacation season kicks off unofficially as Mississippi Insurance industry regulators warn that car insurance costs will be rising.

"On the lost cost side we out pace the rest of the country in what it's actually costing," said Mississippi Insurance Department Consumer Services Director Andy Case.

The insurance regulator is talking about car insurance rates. As drivers hit the roadways this holiday, they will soon be hit with whopping car insurance rate increases.

The Mississippi Insurance Department expects a more than 20% hike in insurance coverage because the state leads the nation in payouts in several categories.

"There are three buckets of expenses that the insurance company will see. One is the medical side. Another is the pain and suffering, third party claims and lawsuits and the auto body repair," added Case.

Officials said these are nationwide trends but Mississippi's heavily saturated risk pool is driving up costs for everyone.

Contributing factors are accidents due to traffic congestion, roadway conditions and distracted driving.

But there are some things you can do to help keep down the cost of car insurance.

"Be wise in your insurance choices. Go sit down and talk to a qualified agent and find out what options are available for you, what coverage are necessary which ones do you not need. Revisit your deductible. deductibles are a great way to control your rate," said Case.

Before the holiday travel period got underway the Mississippi Highway Patrol reported a nearly 10% increase in crashes during the first four and a half months of this year compared to last year.

Statistics insurance commission officials say will impact the cost of your coverage.

Those car insurance increases can be expected in the coming months.
