A vigil was held Friday night for a man shot to death by a Jackson nightclub security guard. A large crowd of family and friends of Jessie James Newson gathered at Robinson Park in Clinton.
They lit candles and sold t-shirts with his likeness and words questioning the events that lead to the 27-year-old's death at Freelon's Club last week.
Newson's cousin described him as a jokester and bright young businessman and he called for an end to the violence.
"It's too much negativity in the black community and we need to stop this and real men need to step up and say enough is enough," said Brian Williams.
The preliminary investigation revealed Newson had been in an altercation inside the club before the shooting and came back armed with a handgun before he was shot by the security guard.
Jessie Newson's funeral is Saturday.
