CONSIDER THIS: Making things worse

Mississippi is in the spotlight this week with the two American Idol finalists hailing from the Hospitality State. Many Mississippians have had much success in the world of music and LaPorsha and Trent are destined to join that group.

Unfortunately, instead of savoring the much needed positive publicity for our state we are also dealing with a tremendous amount of negative attention when Mississippi’s legislature and governor created the religious accommodations act this week.

This law is completely unnecessary and will merely reinforce the perception that Mississippi is made up of intolerant, biased, bigots. Not only will it reinforce our terrible reputation, it will ultimately cost us jobs and revenue that we desperately need. And, at the end of the day, it is most likely unconstitutional.

Consider this:

Instead of creating unnecessary, discriminatory laws, legislators need to focus on the core of government responsibility. How about legislation to fix our crumbling roads and bridges, address our budget shortfalls and fix our broken education system? Those are critical needs that impact everyone.

Instead of dividing our state, do something to make it better and bring us together. That’s the type of leadership Mississippi desperately needs.
