Parents concerned about lights at John Hopkins Elementary

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -

Lights on day and night around John Hopkins Elementary school in Jackson prompted calls from concerned parents. They say it's a waste of money, so 3 On Your Side reached out to Jackson Public Schools for answers.

In an email response, spokesman Sherwin Johnson said, in part:

"The lights at John Hopkins Elementary School are triggered by a timer. There appears to be an interruption in the timer that may have been caused by a power surge or mechanical malfunction. JPS Facilities and Operations staff is working to repair and reset the timer."

JPS installed exterior lighting at the school as a safety measure for parents and students involved in activities after normal school hours. Please ask parents to contact the school if they have questions or concerns."
