Former Southaven Mayor back In court denying he misused taxpayer money

The attorney for former Southaven Mayor Greg Davis is denying allegations that Davis misused $73,000 in city funds that the state auditor wants repaid.

Attorney Michael Heilman told members of the state Court of Appeals that none of Davis' expenses while mayor were denied by the board of aldermen.

However, prosecutors told the court Wednesday that Davis never brought itemized expenses to the board and sought to hide his personal use of public funds.

Davis was sued by State Auditor Stacey Pickering for allegedly misusing more than $170,000 in city funds for trips, expensive dinners and clothing. Davis repaid $96,000 but still owes $73,915, including interest and penalties.

A Hinds County chancery judge in 2014 ordered Davis to reimburse the city. Davis was mayor of Southaven for 15 years.
