With over 52 percent of the vote, Victor Mason was victorious in becoming the Democratic nominee for Sheriff of Hinds county, beating out incumbent Sheriff Tyrone Lewis.

Mason already has plans for the department, calling for a full evaluation of the jail in Raymond, where he plans to move the patrol division, and more training for deputies.

"Were going to be held accountable for everything because the community is who we work for and I want them to be satisfied with my services," said Mason.

In the General election, Mason will face three candidates, two of whom are former Hinds deputies.

Independent candidate Les Tannehill says his experience has prepared him to lead county law enforcement into the future.
Tannehill is promising to resolve problems at the county jail.

"I'm the only candidate that has actually worked both the Jackson facility and the detention facility," said Tannehill. "I believe to correct, fix a problem, you first have to understand how that issue works. I do and understand it and it starts with your employees."

Also an independent, Reginald Thompson, has 30 years of law enforcement experience, 20 of those were with the county.

Reginald Thompson said,

"We need to have more people and change the electronics, that's the problems is the maintenance," said Thompson. "Go with manual locks. Have more people where they can actually watch the inmates."

Today we tried to reach out to a third candidate, Republican Charlette Stewart Oswalt, but we were unsuccessful.
