An upset in the race for Hinds County Sheriff as Victor Mason unseated one term incumbent Tyrone Lewis and challenger Anthony Thompson in the Democratic Primary.

The Mason camp was confident in the outcome less than two hours after the polls closed. Mason claimed victory over Lewis, telling supporters it's the first step in taking back the county.
Well before 9 p.m. primary night Mason supporters erupted in cheers while watching results. The 59 year old was ahead in the numbers throughout the night.

The 32 year law enforcement officer arrived from the courthouse at his campaign headquarters to shouts and cheers. He thanked God, his wife and family and a host of others before promising that if elected he would get to work communicating with judges, the district attorney and the community.

His first priority will be the Hinds County Detention Center.
"It showed me that people wanted change,"said Mason. "They were tired of excuses. They were tired of lies, so hey let's move forward and get somebody in there who can take care of the business." .

"I want a change. I'm tired of crime," said Mason supporter Barbara Lindsey. "I'm tired of the excuses and I wanted improvement and so Victor Mason was the best choice."

"I know Victor will do what's right to make sure that the jail is a secure place for those that are unfortunate enough to be incarcerated and the citizens of Hinds county," said John Gillespie who cast his ballot for Mason.

The Democratic primary winner faces Republican Cherlette Stewart Oswalt and Independents Les Tannehill and Reginald Thompson in the November 3rd general election.
