The man accused of shooting and killing a man in front of the Madison County Courthouse on Monday made his initial court appearance.

24-year-old William Wells appeared in court on Tuesday and his bond has been set at $300 thousand.

Authorities say he shot 37-year-old Kendrick Armond Brown outside the courthouse and Madison County District Attorney Michael Guest says authorities are examining whether Wells was trying to take revenge on Brown.

According to the Associated Press, Wells' mother, Sherry Wells, was shot Saturday night while driving her car. She was expected to testify against Brown on drug charges that could have left Brown imprisoned for life.

Canton Police Chief Otha Brown says Sherry Wells drove herself to the police station to report the crime, then was taken to a hospital for treatment of a knee injury. She was later released.
