JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -

Next Tuesday, a ground breaking will be held on the new 205 room, 5 star Westin hotel. The construction cost is $53-million. As that project gets going, infrastructure improvements will begin next week, causing some traffic changes.

West street and Congress streets between Court street and Tombigbee will be closed down. Parts of Tombigbee, Congress, Court and West streets will be down to one lane.

People working and visiting downtown tell us they expect a little inconvenience with progress but are excited the new hotel is coming.

"It will be great for the downtown area," said Erica Crisler. "The area is thriving. its coming back to life. it will be a really good addition for the downtown area."

"It should be a domino effect in enhancing everything around it to make it more attractive for people to come here to be in Jackson, to visit Jackson more often," added Emanuel Kennedy.

Work continues on the historic Edison Walthall Hotel on Capitol street. The building is being renovated for an apartment complex. There will be 120 units once construction is completed.

They hope to complete work by next summer.
