TUPELO, MS (WTVA)- -

A Tupelo woman has been taken into custody by the Lee County Sheriff's Department for allegedly trying to sell her unborn child.

"I've been here 16 years today, and I have never seen this situation," said Tupelo Police Lieutenant Lynette Sandling.

The Department of Human Services says 31-year-old Kathryn Herring visited several families across Tupelo and Lee County offering her unborn child for adoption in exchange for payment.

Tupelo police say they have been investigating this case since February.

According to Lt. Sandling, the leading factor for the crime was cash.

"During the investigation," said Sandling,"we did determine at numerous occasions Ms. Herring did try to sell her child for profit... I think at some point she was in need of money and that was just an out for her."

Investigators say Herring has been diagnosed with a mental illnesses.

The child, now 18-months-old, was taken into custody with DHS.

Herring's bond was set at $25,000.

Her case is scheduled to be presented to the grand jury on October 7.
