M-Braves tally 18 hits in win over Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM (MississippiBraves.com) The Mississippi Braves erupted for 12 runs on a season-high 18 hits on Tuesday night, taking down the Birmingham Barons 12-3 to open a five-game series at Regions Field.

The Braves (18-13, 51-48) scored six in the fourth inning to pull away to a 7-0 lead.  KD Kang, who hit a solo home run in the first, led off the fourth with a single.  Kevin Ahrens and Rio Ruiz followed suit to load the bases against Barons starter Tyler Danish (7-7).

Two batters later, David Rohm hit a two-run single, and Levi Hyams drove in another with a single of his own.  With two out, Sean Godfrey clubbed a two-run triple, and new signee Luis Mateo got his first M-Braves hit for an RBI, the sixth run of the frame.

Danish was chased after four innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits in the losing decision.

Greg Ross (4-9) picked up the win, allowing just a run on six hits over seven innings, posting his fifth quality start in his last six outings.

Mississippi tacked on two more in the sixth with a two-run double from Mateo, who drove in three total with a pair of hits in his M-Braves debut.

In the seventh, the M-Braves made it 11-0 with a Matt Kennelly RBI groundout and a Levi Hyams RBI single.  Hyams finished with three hits and a pair of runs batted in.

Birmingham (21-9, 54-45) broke through with a run in the seventh when Rob Brantly singled to plate former Brave Christian Marrero.

The Braves got the run back in the eighth on a Kang ground-rule double, plating Sean Godfrey for a 12-1 lead.

Tyler Jones came on in relief and pitched a scoreless eighth but gave up two in the ninth on RBI singles to Joey DeMichele and former M-Brave Marcus Lemon.  Mitch Lambson got the final out, sealing the 12-3 win.

The M-Braves and Barons play the second of five games on Wednesday night at Regions Field, with right-hander Victor Mateo (6-6, 2.84) slated to take the hill against right-hander Robinson Leyer (1-0, 2.89).  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CT.
