JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Jackson public works crews are busy making repairs to roadways daily, but how is the progress going in finding a permanent solution? Just over a year after Jackson voters said they would foot the bill for road improvements, plans are slowly taking shape.

Public works crews made travel a bit easier on Terry Road Tuesday after spreading fresh asphalt on deep indentations in the pavement. But residents want permanent solutions to their road woes.

"Of course there's a whole bunch of potholes and I'm dodging them, and at the same time i'm trying to watch the traffic," said resident Bert Johnson who said his scooter hit a pothole Saturday.

On January 14 of last year, 90 % of Jackson voters approved a One Cent Sales Tax to be used for infrastructure improvements.

On March 1, the Department of Revenue began collecting that tax. Now the City of Jackson is finalizing plans to repair those potholed filled streets.

The Infrastructure Master Plan will determine what street resurfacing, reconstruction, drainage and utility work will happen and when. Residents will soon be able to offer their input.

"They'll have an opportunity to comment on the plan, make any suggestions or any comments, give us feedback on the plan as far as how we have prioritized the work and selected the areas where we'll be doing work in the first year," said Jackson Public Works Director Kishia Powell.

Officials said the first year of funding for the Capital Plan is limited to $60 million dollars.

"In the next couple of months we'll be developing the capital program for years two through five," added Powell.

Each month the One Cent Sales Tax brings in about $1 million dollars to the city.

We are told the Public Comment Draft of the Infrastructure Master Plan should be completed in the next two weeks.
