FLORENCE, MS (WLBT) -
This Taking Back Our Neighborhoods report takes me to Florence, where a viewer said she is frustrated over abandoned property across the street, but she is more concerned that it has become a haven for illegal activity. She told me she has been calling Rankin County officials for help since October but nothing has been done, so she called Three On Your Side.
There are actually two abandoned mobile homes across the street from Amanda's house. One is in relatively good shape, but the property is overgrown with weeds and shrubs.
"I don't let my kids come over here," said Amanda.
In the lot next to one trailer is another mobile home, but itis in horrible shape; with discarded debris in the weed choked yard beside it. Amanda says snakes are a problem in the summer time, but she says there is a bigger concern with these structures, the amount of activity that goes on.
"Tons of activity," said Amanda. "You know, people going in and out of vacant trailers. I've called several times and I have not gotten any actions, so I decided to call y'all."
"I've actually seen some people just right out in the open. It looks like doing drug deals and that's very concerning to me," Amanda continues. "Both of these trailers, from what I understand, have been abandoned for almost 10-years, so and I have tried to contact the bank that owns it and Rankin County and have gotten nowhere."
Amanda said, there are children in this neighborhood and she fears for their safety.
"I just want it cleaned up...cleaned up, so, I mean, we have a nice neighborhood and as far as this one little area, it's just horrible," added Amanda.
Amanda's neighborhood is in the 100 block of Russell Street.
I contacted the Rankin County Office of Community Development and I was told the director would give me a call back, So far, I have not received that call, but I will keep you posted.
