Parents want choices on schools

Monday was the kickoff of National School Choice Week. More than 11,000 events are planned across the country to raise awareness of the importance of providing children with access to what organizers call, challenging, motivating, and effective education options.

Major rallies, celebrations and other activities are planned at 22 state capitals. Several events were held in Mississippi in 2014 including in Jackson. Events planned include open houses at schools, information sessions for parents, school assemblies,  and roundtable policy discussions.

"School choice is no longer just an idea; it is a reality for many millions of American families and National School Choice Week provides an opportunity for people across our nation to celebrate the benefits of providing parents with access to the best learning environments for their individual children," said National School Choice Week President Andrew Campanella.

According to a press release from the group, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution last week recognizing January 25-31 as School Choice Week. No major events were announced for Mississippi.
