Millsaps women's hoops beats Berry to take lead in SAA
JACKSON (GoMajors.com)- In a battle of conference unbeatens, the Millsaps Majors held off the Berry Vikings 53-50 on Sunday, grabbing the top spot in the Southern Athletic Association.
The Majors improved to 14-3 overall and 6-0 in the SAA while the Vikings dropped a game back in both the overall and conference standings at 13-4 and 5-1.
Both team started ice cold from the field, with the teams combing to start 2-24 on the game. The Majors started to heat up and went on a 20-3 run to open the game's largest lead at 17 at 24-7. But Berry would quickly heat up, the highest scoring team in the SAA rattled off a 13-0 run of their own to shave the Majors lead to 24-20. Millsaps would lead 26-22 at the half.
The Vikings would carry their momentum into the second half, grabbing their first lead after back-to-back threes by Mel McLean to take a 28-26 lead. Millsaps would regroup and score 11 of the next 15 to regain a two-possesion lead at 37-32 following a pair of Miah Brooks lay-ins. The junior finished with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Majors would build the lead to as many as eight in the second half, but the Vikings would not go quietly. Berry would go on an 8-1 run over a two-minute span to retake the lead, 50-49 on a Chanlir Segarra lay-in.
Out of a timeout, the Majors called on senior Velvet Johnson, who responded with a tough lay-in to give the Majors back the lead with 45 seconds left. Millsaps would turn the defense up on the following Berry possession, forcing Segarra to step on the baseline on a drive and giving the ball back to the Majors.
Beverly Holmes cashed in the final two of her game-high 15 with two clutch free throws with 16 seconds left. The Majors then forced two errant threes from the Vikings and held on for the hard-fought win.
The Majors dominated the glass on Sunday, out rebounding Berry 42-32, including 18-8 on the offensive end. That led to the Majors owning a 15-4 edge on second-chance points.
Millsaps will next face the Hendrix Warriors on Friday night in the third game of a four-game homestand. Tip time is set for 6pm on Friday.
