MADISON COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Science and engineering can be fun, especially when you're building a working robot.

The students who gathered at Olde Towne Middle School in Madison County Saturday have done that, and they had the opportunity to compete against each other for the VEX Robotics Competition.

Most of the students are high schoolers, but two middle schools and one elementary school have future engineers taking part in the competition.
They built their robots beforehand, and on Saturday the robots picked up cubes and stacked objects.

"The key is to get the maximum amount of points as possible by putting blocks on posts and putting them in squares," says Ridgeland High School student Daniel Hits.

It's a growing sport and it brings the best out in all the kids, with engineering and computer skills. It's amazing what can happen, says Bill Richardson, who teaches robotics at Olde Towne Middle School.

The students are vying to ultimately compete in a world competition.
