BRANDON, MS (WLBT) -

The man accused of striking and killing a Belhaven student with his truck, has been arrested and charged in his death.

After blood tests determined he was over the legal blood alcohol limit, 29-year-old Reginald Davis was arrested and charged with felony DUI death, in the death of 26-year-old Trey Rich.

Rankin County authorities say Rich died after being struck while riding his bike, in Richland Christmas Eve.

Rankin County District Attorney Michael Guest says, "At the time officers responded to the accident, they did smell alcohol coming from the defendant. The defendant did admit to drinking."

DUI death carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.

Davis was denied bond during his initial appearance Friday. This wasn't his first time going before a judge.

Guest says, "The defendant was also on probation at the time of the offense. He had previously been convicted for auto burglary here in Rankin County."

Rich's family said he had a bright future. He was a wide receiver and kick returner for the Belhaven Blazers football team.

He was leaving his job at Fed Ex, the night he was killed.

"A young person who was working extremely hard to put himself through college the night in question. I believe he was coming home from work after having worked on Christmas Eve.  To have his life cut down after he had worked so hard to get to the position he was at is a tragic situation," says Guest.

Davis is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing in Rankin county court January 27th.
