JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -

Mayor Tony Yarber has released a statement following the recent arrests of a group of teen carjacking, murder suspects.

“Each time I become aware of violent acts of crime in our city, I am aggrieved. It is disheartening to know that the God given right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is threatened by those with no regard for the value of another's life or welfare.

Our Jackson Police Department is using all of its resources to combat crime in this city because Jackson's leadership has made public safety a top priority. Be assured that we will unapologetically pursue the criminal element without regard to any specific side of town.

But, it will take all of us. We're calling on the community to help police in these investigations. We're calling on churches. We're calling on neighborhood associations. We're calling on all residents to team with us to fight crime.

Our officers are out in the community. They're more visible because we want to deter any would-be criminal from committing an offense. Overall, our city is one of the best in the South. It's my home and I am proud of it, just like so many of you. This violence is not who we are as a city. We are vibrant. We are connected. We are prosperous. We are innovative. We are committed. We are Jackson!”
