JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A gift from the heart has turned into a money pit for a Jackson couple whose children raised funds to repair their home.

It's a story we first brought you in October and today those improvements have not materialized and the parents' surprise has become more of a nightmare.

"I just praise God for it. I just praise God," said Jackson resident Dwight Taylor .

He and wife Yvette were surprised by the news of their 10 children's efforts to renovate their home in phases.

The children had hoped the couple, who have been married for 40 years, would be starting the new year with a new bedroom, kitchen and dining room.

For three weeks they stayed with relatives while a contractor began in the bedroom.

But anxious to see the work they returned and were very disappointed.

"So that was $500.00 gone down the drain," said Yvette Taylor pointing to a discarded tub and shower in the yard of their home.

She said the improperly installed shower and bath had to be replaced. They also found plumbing problems that caused a leak in the wall, no insulation and a bad paint job.

"Just the mere fact that we had to go in and tear everything out and redo it you know that just who wants to do that? Because we could have moved on to something else, but we just thank the Lord. What we said we'll do is just take it one step at a time," said Taylor.

Now a generous gift is costing the family thousands more.

"It was kind of frustrating to see them how happy they were when we first started. And then they come and see all the work that they did and it wasn't done correctly and having to spend extra money that we really didn't have," said daughter Shekinah Banks.

The Taylors are happy with the retailing in the shower and new plumbing .

The children are continuing to raise money for the repairs.

We will keep you posted on their progress.
