Crews have temporarily closed I-55 in both directions to demolish the old bridge over I-55.
Right now traffic is at a stand still on the interstate and the exit ramps.
So if you're heading on I-55 north or southbound in the next half hour you can expect some delays.
The bridge was closed starting at 6 p.m. Saturday night.
MDOT started to detour drivers to the exit ramps sides of the highway at that time.
Once MDOT crews collect all the dirt and debris caused by this demolition, they will reopen only the exit ramps and traffic will be detoured there.
"Target of 30 minutes to have the interstate shut down, we are hoping that it's a little bit less than that, our main priority first is the get those exit ramps cleared off so we can story traffic back on those routes," said Rob Pettit, MDOT Spokesperson.
MDOT officials said it could take less than a half hour.
But they expect to reopen all lanes on I-55 by Sunday morning.
They advise people heading in the direction of the demolition to just try to find an alternate route.?
