Presley: No electric or gas shut-offs during freeze warnings

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - As a large portion of Mississippi braces for more frigid temperatures overnight, Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley reminded electric and natural gas utilities that customers are protected against disconnection of services when a Freeze Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service.

"Cold weather can be a very serious threat to your health if you have no heat in your home. This rule is in place to protect the well-being of our citizens during times of extreme weather," said Presley.

The provision of the Mississippi Ratepayers' Bill of Rights, authored by Presley, says that:

"Ratepayers shall have the right to avoid disconnection of electric and gas service for nonpayment of bills if, as of 8:00 a.m. on the scheduled disconnection day, a freeze warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for the county of the scheduled disconnection."

The rule does not allow customers to be relieved of their obligations to the utility but delays disconnection until the extreme weather has passed.
