RANKIN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A Rankin County man admitted in court Monday that he tried to kill his neighbor. Cregg Puckett entered a guilty plea.

"I am laying there bleeding on the ground, my son is watching this," said Thomas Presley. He walks up and puts a gun to my face and fires."

Thomas Presley survived six gunshot wounds to his body. Behind the 22 caliber trigger, his neighbor, Cregg Puckett who pleaded guilty to attempted murder.

"His actions affected his family as well as my family," added Presley. "And it's almost a year now, two months shy of being a year, that I have not been able to provide for my family. And it has hurt me and my family financially."

All over what victim Thomas Presley describes as a casual conversation about various property lines connecting a shared pond where Presley's son was fishing that March day.

"We wanted to make sure that the defendant received a substantial amount of time," said District Attorney Michael Guest. "We do believe that based on his actions that he was a dangerous individual and we believe that this sentence will keep him behind bars for a long period of time."

Guest says Puckett's sentence of 40 years with 13 years suspended will keep him locked up for 27 years. Once out of prison, he will have to pay the victim 36 thousand dollars in restitution.

"I don't hate Cregg Puckett," said Presley. "But to fire at another human being as they are just leaving you and there is no confrontation from the other person, I don't even think the term coward can be applied."

Presley is still recovering from major nerve and artery damage and has to undergo at least one more surgery.
