Warren County law enforcement is mourning the sudden loss of a highly respected former interim sheriff.

Othor Jones rose through the ranks of the sheriff's department and is being remembered as a beloved and respected law officer.

Charlie Steele Junior looks back fondly on the life of former Warren County law officer Othor Jones.

The two grew up together as children in Bovina.

"He was a good person. He loved to hunt and fish, and that's what we did," said Steele.

Saturday neighbors found the 77 year old dead in his home after family members were unable to contact him.

"He helped everybody and did what he could for everybody, and he was just an average guy. Born and raised in the community. This is our community," added Steele.

Jones joined the Warren County Sheriff's department in 1972 and quickly became a respected and valued member of the force..

Sheriff Paul Barrett chose him to serve as assistant chief then chief deputy.

"He was just a complete officer. I rarely saw him wear a gun," said Robert Bell.

Jones hired former sheriff's deputy Robert Bell.

He says he shared with him the keys to being successful in law enforcement.

"A good family man but always had words of encouragement for you, words of encouragement. He called me Bob and he said 'Bob if you want to get this right do it this way'," added Bell.

The Warren county native was appointed interim sheriff when Barrett retired in 1995.

Sheriff Martin Pace said Jones remained close with his colleagues following his retirement in 2002.

He had just seen him at the department's Christmas luncheon about three weeks ago.

"He just had a way about him to communicate with people. He knew law enforcement. He knew people. He knew this community, and there was no one else even considered when I took office to be my chief deputy," said Pace.

The avid hunter and outdoorsman spent 30 years with the department.

After his retirement we are told he devoted his life to caring for his ailing wife Mary who died in December of 2013.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
