RANKIN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - It's important that you are prepared if severe weather strikes. Right now MEMA officials are urging you to have a plan in place in case central Mississippi becomes the target of severe weather.

Officials at MEMA say don't panic, just prepare.

"You know we only have a couple weeks ago for you to look to why you have to take all severe weather warnings seriously," said MEMA Spokesman Greg Flynn.

Five tornadoes touched down in the state and a total of five lives were lost in those disasters that struck Marion and Jones Counties.

"And unfortunately, we had two people that were killed in a mobile home which is the number one thing we tell folks not to do," add Flynn. "Just increase your probability of survival by getting to the most interior part of your home, making smart decisions, leaving mobile homes and manufactured homes and getting out of your car into a sturdy structure."

Flynn said right now is not a time to panic, but a time to prepare.

"Just make sure you are out of harms way," said Flynn. "This is a time to really go over your plan, know what you're going to do, because many times if you haven't and that siren goes off, that's when people start to freak out and don't do what they are supposed to do."

Flynn says it's important to check and restock your emergency supply kit in case your home is without power.
