JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - "The chandelier right when you walked in, that was probably one of my favorite pieces of the whole building, when I walked in for the first time I loved it, and I loved it on our wedding day," says Cynthia McMullin of Jackson, who got married at Commons Hall at Eudora Welty's Birthplace on December 21, 2013.

Commons Hall, and most of the things inside, were lost to a fire two weeks ago on December 18.

"I drove by and it was just so sad. It was a week before our anniversary," she says.

Firefighters have determined the blaze started in the gas log fireplace. They believe the cause is low temperature ignition, similar to spontaneous combustion. A fire was lit in the fireplace the day before.

David Morris, who co-owns The Commons, says a few charred items were pulled out of the attic, which took the brunt of the fire. And while no Eudora Welty artifacts were stored there, Morris lost some family possessions.

"I had a bible from the 1700's from my family. So we lost a lot up there actually," he says.

Rugs and furniture from the first floor were saved. It's unclear right now if any parts of the structure itself are are still usable.

"The bones are pretty good in it, however the big expense is from here on. The frame was huge, we don't know yet," he says, but vows to build on the same site, even better than before.

The Eudora Welty bronze statue, which sits outside Commons Hall, will be moved so it won't be damaged by debris in the salvage process.
