JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - AMR helped make the metro area a safer place on new Year's Eve with its Safe Rides Home project.

If you were drinking last night and needed a safe ride back home, AMR was offering free rides. And there was a huge decrease in the number of passengers taking advantage of the free rides from New Year's Eve celebrations compared to last year.

AMR spokesman, Jim Pollard says, "We see ourselves as having a responsibility to prevent emergencies such as DUI crashes."

Pollard says six 15 passenger vans were used to provide rides to metro area locations.

Pollard says, "We began taking calls at 11pm New Years Eve. We took our last call at 3am New Years Day and we transported right at 100 people this year. That's less than half of what we transported last year."

Pollard says those aren't the only numbers that declined as 2015 approached.

"And it so happens that last night we also had a substantially less busy call volume for our 911 services. It also happens that last night we were substantially less busy in providing ambulances for 911 calls. We are grateful for that. It means folks were being safer," Pollard tells us.

Possibly having a plan B, Pollard says, such as relying on a designated driver or using a taxi.

This is the 18th year AMR has offered the free rides for people going home.

This year it teamed up with the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of the Central Mississippi Area and the McCoy House for Sober Living.
