RANKIN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - They were considered a perfect family with a fairy tale life: Hinds County Deputy Chris Smith and his wife Amber raising their two children in a home on Caledonian Boulevard in Rankin County. But on a Wednesday night in April, gunshots shattered that peace.

"The deputies responded and secured the house, and learned from the oldest child, the parents had been arguing, they went into a bedroom, shut the door and locked it, then they heard the gunshots," says Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey.

Investigators say the 34-year-old deputy shot and killed his 27-year-old wife, then turned the gun on himself. The children were placed in the care of their grandmother.

Ten days before the incident, a Rankin County deputy had responded to a verbal disturbance involving the couple. Amber had told the deputy the two were going through a separation, and Chris had hidden her keys so she couldn't leave.

Friends described Amber as a dedicated full-time mother and compassionate citizen who donated toys every Christmas to the Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital.
