JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Many people are on the roadways this holiday season and the Mississippi Highway Patrol is working to keep you safe while you travel.

"I think it's going to be extremely busy," said Shanlyn Jones. "The traffic is going to be real bad."

Headed home to the Big Easy, Jones will soon be one of the millions of drivers traveling this holiday season. AAA is projecting more than 98 million Americans will be on the roadways which is a four percent increase compared to last year. Jones says this most important part of traveling is to be alert.

"No texting and driving, absolutely not, no way," said Jones. "Kind of watch out for everyone including myself. Continue to double check and make sure everything is safe."

While drivers do their part, the Mississippi Highway Patrol is saturating not only the metro area, but the entire state with extra troopers.

"The federal grant money will be coming into the Department of Public Safety and then on to the highway patrol to add these additional troopers to the road to make sure folks get to where they are going safely and get back home safely," said Public Safety Spokesman Warren Strain.

Strain, says there will at least at extra one hundred troopers out this holiday weekend. The grant money will run through the new year and you can expect troopers not only to be out on state roads, but setting up safety check points as well.

"You know, people tend to have a lot fun and do a little bit of drinking and enjoying themselves," said Jones. "But, it's important that they are out and protecting everyone."
