Retired NFL players give back

The bicycle giveaway at Smith Wills Stadium Saturday morning wasn't just a handout.

"This is recognition for achievement. All these children had to achieve a certain academic standard and behavior. Not just come from low income families," says City of Jackson Ward 4 Councilman De'Keither Stamps.

The treat the kids received during the drive-through giveaway wasn't just the bike, but also the people they had a chance to meet.

People like Jeffery Moore.

"I played for Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington Redskins," he says.

The runningback, who retired in 1985, attended Jackson State University. He says rewarding the children is rewarding for him.

"Especially when there's a kid in the car, and you see a kid's face in the car, and you see his face light up. It's a wonderful thing," he says.

Robert Brazile played for the Houston Oilers and retired in 1984. He also attended Jackson State. He says the bike giveaway provides a moment to reflect.

"If you think back, there was someone in everybody's neighborhood who was less fortunate than you. I think that's what Vernon had in mind when he started this," Brazile says.

Vernon Perry played for the Oilers and the New Orleans Saints. The cornerback retired in 1985.

Perry says, as a child he never had a bike. Now he can give away more than 500 of them with the help of the non-profit group Reading on Wheels and the retired NFL players.

"Everybody looked at me funny, said 500 bikes, you're not gonna do it. I said yes I am because the good Lord gonna let me do it," he says.
