JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A new affordable housing development will soon begin to take shape in Jackson's midtown.

"Oh we are excited. We are ecstatic," said resident Monica Cannon Butler.

With open arms current Midtown residents are welcoming the new $9.7 million dollar affordable housing project that is turning dilapidated broken houses into homes.

"It's going to be a great influence on midtown," said resident Shmea Kelly. "Especially the diversity of the housing. Not seeing so many habitat housing, but seeing some diversity coming to the neighborhood and also seeing some different families coming around. It's going to be great."

"It opens up the opportunity for current residents to move into quality housing that they may not have access to now, said Midtown partners Executive Director Kristi Hendrix. As well as new residents who have been very interested in moving into the neighborhood but need those housing options."

Hendrix says when this project is complete there will be 31 units that span a five block area in Midtown. She says the development includes the substantial rehabilitation of 16 existing properties and new construction of an additional six.

"This is a great community," said Butler. "We have amazing neighbors. I mean if you are not in midtown you are really missing out on a great experience."

Funding for the West Millsaps development is supported by the Mississippi Home Corporation among other foundations and funds. It should be complete in the fall of 2015.
