Flu is worse in Mississippi than most states

The flu is taking its toll on Mississippi and three other southern states. The highest amount of influenza activity is reported in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia.

In all, the CDC reports 14 states with widespread flu activity. That means emergency rooms are filling up across the country with people suffering symptoms.

Part of the problem is the dominant "A" strain circulating is not in the vaccine. Some doctors anticipate the illness to spread even more across the holidays.

"All the travel, all the family gatherings that will be occurring, I think it will get a little worse before it starts getting better," said Dr. Keto Trivedi, an emergency room physician.

Doctors at the CDC say the people most affected right now are children and young adults.

Despite a less effective flu vaccine this year, experts say it can help prevent many cases and lessen the severity of the flu if you do get it.
