HINDS COUNTY, MS (WLBT) -
Some Hinds County employees are getting an overdue Christmas gift. Supervisors have approved paying $1 million dollars to the workers for unpaid overtime hours.
This is the result of a 2012 federal lawsuit filed on behalf of several hundred employees. This year $500-thousand dollars will be distributed according to supervisors. Sheriff Tyrone Lewis and former Sheriff Malcolm McMillin are defendants in the legal action. Sheriff's spokesman Othor Cain told us that Lewis was named because he is the current sheriff, Cain
said the lawsuit suit stems back to the previous administration. Part of the problem was blamed on poor record keeping and a lack of overtime policies.
Supervisors said those issues are being addressed.
