JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The American Cancer Society says that they are one step closer to making the Hope Lodge community for cancer patients a reality.

The organization and its partners recently announced a pledged gift of $3.1 million from the Gertrude C. Ford Foundation.

The organization says that because of this generous gift they will be able to make an even bigger impact for patients and their caregivers receiving treatment at any metro-area hospital or clinic in Jackson.

Thanks to this recent donation, the Hope Lodge facility will be named the American Cancer Society's Gertrude C. Ford Hope Lodge. It will be located on the former site of Schimmel's Restaurant at 2615 North State Street.

“The Hope Lodge will not only offer a variety of resources and information about cancer but will also provide cancer patients a home-away-from-home at no cost to ensure they have the best opportunity for completing treatment and receiving the best possible outcome in overcoming this disease,” says Kelly Doss, executive vice president of the Mid-South Division of the American Cancer Society.

The $10.9 million project is expected to begin construction in late summer. The American Cancer Society is working closely with Trivers and Associates in St. Louis, Mo. for the design of the complex. The company has designed multiple Hope Lodges across the country.

According to the American Cancer Society, the Hope Lodge will include 32 guest rooms, each with a private bath and sleeping accommodations for two. It will also have a chapel, community dining, kitchen and recreational areas, and each floor will have a day room and guest laundry with 24-hour access.

Many cancer patients require daily treatment for multiple weeks, and staying in a hotel for that long is expensive. This facility will allow patients and a caregiver to stay at no cost and be with others having similar experiences. The organization says that this supportive environment can be invaluable.

The American Cancer Society operates 31 Hope Lodge facilities across the United States and Puerto Rico.
