A 357 revolver ended up in the hands of a burglar, and Rankin County Sheriff's Investigators need your help putting the thief behind bars.

The evidence is being processed at the Mississippi Crime Lab and investigators are hoping it will lead them to the person who broke in Martin's General Merchandise store in the John's community.

"They actually had taken the cover off the meter box attempting to shut power down to the business," said investigator Chris Ainsworth.

The tampered meter box is what alerted a Rankin County Sheriff's Deputy who was patrolling the area late Friday night. Ainsworth says when the person was unsuccessful shutting down the power, they went around to the side of the store and shattering the glass to the store window.

"It was an obstacle for them to get in," added Ainsworth. "They went through the window on the north end of the building. It was pretty high up about six or seven feet up in the air and were able to breach that window. As soon as they made entry they went straight to the meter box and killed the power on the interior of the building."

They stole a 357 revolver handgun store owner Sandy Martin says has been in the store for more than 20 years, along with about 300 dollars worth of tobacco products.

"Took some cartons of cigarettes. Some Reeses peanut butter cups, Camels, they took really more cigar products than what's here on the counter," said Martin.

Martin says she thinks the person or persons responsible is someone who is familiar with the store.

"We think maybe someone came in through the window and then went to the back door and opened it and let someone else in to help them," added Martin.

Martin says this is the fourth time in nearly 30 years the store has been broken into, and she wants the person responsible caught.

"We are a part of this community and the community has always been good to us and we would just appreciate any help with anybody that might know anything at all," said Martin.

If you have an information on this break in, you are asked to call the Rankin County Sheriff's Office or Crimestoppers at 601-355-TIPS.
