Longtime toy drive honors Jackson volunteer

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A longtime Christmas tradition in the metro kicked off this weekend: a toy drive for area children.

Games, food and even an appearance from Santa Claus served as highlights for the Andre Brown Toy Drive.

Fondren's Fashion House, Omega Psi Phi and BDAY 99.1 FM sponsored the event.

It was recently named in memory of Andre Brown, who was involved with the toy drive for several years.

"He chaired this committee for many, many years - 8 to 10 years -- before his life was suddenly taken. He's also a former member of the Beta Alpha chapter. So we dearly love him, want to keep this living, and we also want to help children," organizer George Jamison said.

Some who showed up donated a toy or two.

However, the owner of BDAY 99.1 FM said a woman who came to the event went above and beyond everybody else.

"She actually had two carloads, two truckloads of stuff and we actually helped her get it all out. That was a beautiful feeling and we want people to continue to do this until Christmas, and when we get it all done, we'll feel like we've done something big in the community," Smith said.

Jamison said the toy drive has been going strong for 75 years in the metro.
