A standoff Friday morning forced the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department to lock down the county courthouse for about an hour and block all streets leading to it.

This started around 9:15 a.m. when a man with a gun inside a car outside the courthouse was threatening to harm himself and to harm law enforcement officers.

The man with the gun was identified as Eric Bailey, said to be in his 30s. He was scheduled to appear in court after being indicted on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Undersheriff Willie Wallace says the situation could have ended "very badly" if Bailey had gotten out of the car with the gun visible. However, after an hour of negotiations, Bailey gave himself up peacefully. Deputies then discovered the gun Bailey had in his pocket was a toy pistol.

Bailey was arrested and taken to a medical facility for a mental evaluation.
