JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -

John Colette, attorney for former Mississippi Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps, wants to push back the January 5 trial date.

In a motion filed Thursday, Colette wrote he received 75 discs of government evidence against Epps Tuesday and needs more time to review it. He also said in his filing that he has discussed a delay with prosecutors and they don't object.

Epps and Brandon businessman Cecil McCrory have pleaded not guilty to charged McCrory gave Epps hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for Epps steering prison contracts to companies McCrory owned or consulted for.

Epps served 12 years as Corrections Commissioner. He was appointed in 2002 by then Governor Ronnie Musgrove and resigned in November, a day before he was charged.

Epps faces a long prison term and millions in fines if convicted.
