Newly elected judge Lorita Cooper Stokes has stepped down from her role as City Councilwoman for the City of Jackson. She says her resignation is effective Immediately.
Stokes represented Ward 3, but recently was elected as a Hinds County Judge.
She says she was contacted by state officials who told her that holding both positions at the same time was a conflict of the Mississippi Constitution.
Stokes had originally planned to vacate her Council seat at the end of the month, but resigned the seat today to avoid confusion.
She said she wants to thank all of her constituents for their prayers and support.
