JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A grassroots effort has turned into reality. A second charter school has been approved by the Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board to open its doors in Jackson.

Midtown Public Charter School will soon begin to take shape in the heart of Jackson's midtown. The empty space will be revamped into classrooms and a high standard learning environment.

"We are approved for 5th through 8th grade," said Midtown Partners Executive Director Kristi Hendrix. "We'll open our doors with fifth through sixth grade. We'll have two classrooms per grade."

Midtown Partners is the non profit organization behind the push for the public school that's funded through public dollars. Hendrix says its been two years in the making, but it all started with a grassroots effort of parents pushing for change.

"It's not about whether you are for charter or not. It's not about JPS versus non JPS. It's never been about those things," said parent Monica Cannon Butler. "It's always been about supporting the kids in this community and providing options for parents."

Butler is a parent and resident of midtown. She says she and many others have been dreaming of the day Midtown Public Charter School would be a reality.

"It's a wonderful feeling. It's a wonderful feeling," said Butler. "But, it just really showed us what we already knew. And that is, when you get a group of parents with a common interest and a common desire you can make change."

Marion Schutte from the Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board says it's free for students to attend, but students must apply.

"Charter schools have to admit every student that applies unless there are more students than there are seats," said Schutte. "If that happens, then each charter school will conduct a lottery, so a random lottery to see which students are eligible to enroll in the school."

This is the second charter school that has been approved for our state. Both charter schools will open in August 2015 in Jackson serving middle school students.
