Collins beats Charleston 28-20 in OT for 3A Championship

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Detric Hawthorn threw three touchdown passes and ran for one more to lead Collins to a 28-20 overtime victory over Charleston and the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 3A title.

This is Collins' (14-2) first state championship since back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002.

Charleston (12-3) dominated early and led 17-6 at halftime. But Collins rallied, with Hawthorn's 32-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Keys in the third quarter pulling the Tigers within a field goal.

Hawthorn ran for the go-ahead touchdown from three yards out with 6:45 left in the game. Charleston responded with a 25-yard field goal by Joao Tardin in the final seconds to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, Hawthorn scrambled out of the pocket and connected with Mark McLaurin for the game-winning touchdown.
