It has been almost six months since the death of retired Jackson Police Officer Richard Polk. Polk, who was 49 years old, died in a motorcycle crash near Edwards in June.

Tuesday night his memory was honored in the Jackson Medical Mall's Christmas Parade. The Medical Mall Foundation sponsored the Richard Polk Light the Night Christmas Parade promoting biker safety.

The Jackson State University Sonic Boom of the South and several high school bands participated.

Polk was a member of the elite Motorcycle Unit for 18 years, and served as a Jackson police officer for 26 years.

Bundled up kids lined the parade route to see Santa. Mayor Tony Yarber says this was a fitting tribute to the late officer.

"I think if you pay attention to what's been happening around the city, these kinds of things have been going on for the last several months," said Yarber. "We're celebrating life, we're celebrating amazing people in the city, and we're celebrating a future that's bright for the city of Jackson. I think that anybody who has been around the city of Jackson remembers Officer Polk. He was apart of that motorcycle unit, amazing brother. We're gonna miss him. His family, his contributions, they're here to celebrate him and his life."

Fellow bikers were asked to participate in the parade. Officer Polk retired from JPD last year. He also worked as a security guard at the Jackson Medical Mall.
