"I'm finally ready to go," said Ricky Bell, who is ready to leave Manhattan Nursing Home for the day to join his family across town for Thanksgiving. It's his first trip home for the holiday in four years.

"I just don't have words for it because I wish I could get him every week, but we don't have the manpower to pick him up," said Sakinah Abudr-Rashied, Ricky's sister.

For the past 23 years, American Medical Response has offered a service project called "Home for the Holiday." AMR coordinates transportation with eight nursing homes to transport patients with mobility challenges.

"With AMR providing non-emergency transport in the form of a wheel chair van with hydraulic lift, we're able to just roll the patient in, transport them to their destination, then roll them out, put them in the house and they can enjoy the time with their family," said Danny Chandler, an Emergency Medical Technician with AMR.

A crisp fall day under a heavenly blue sky welcomed Ricky home.

"It's chilly out here," said Ricky as he emerged from the ambulance.

"That's what I'm trying to tell them, It's chilly out here," his brother, Gregory Davis responds.

Gregory erupted into pure happiness at the sight of his little brother.

"You doing alright today?" said Gregory as he gave Ricky a brotherly brush on his bald head. "There are no words to describe it. And for him to be able to get here for Thanksgiving is a blessing. Thanksgiving is a day people observe it, but I embrace my family daily."

Sakinah, the oldest of the three children, says she is one to cherish every moment, but especially this one with Ricky.

"We're just excited to have him share this day with us because life is very short," said Sakinah.
