Watch the birdie for safe cooking

Don't take your eye off the bird or anything else you cook this Thanksgiving.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the threat of kitchen fires triples on Thanksgiving Day. Many cooking methods are dangerous, and fires can get out of hand, quickly.

With turkey fryers, experts say never use one inside a home, porch or garage, and never overfill the oil or leave the fryer unattended.

"The number one cause of fires in the United States is cooktop fires. And the number one cause of cooktop fires is unattended cooktops. What does that mean? It means pay attention to your food. Stay with your food when you're cooking it. Bring your family into the kitchen. Hang out in the kitchen while you're cooking," said Elliot Kaye, CPSC Chairman.

If you have a fire on the stovetop, put another pan on top to smother the flames.

Don't use water or flour, which can make the fire worse. If you have a fire in the oven, turn it off and keep the door shut.

Last but certainly not least, make sure you have working smoke detectors in your home.
